[28] This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 

'Bethany' in abarim:
The second part of our name can be interpreted in all kinds of way. Bethany may mean House Of Answering, House Of Now, House Of Cohabitation, etcetera. But for some reason scholars appear to draw to the dramatic rather than the consolatory:
For a meaning of the name Bethany, NOBSE Study Bible Name List reads House Of Poverty, and Spiros Zodhiates (The Complete Wordstudy Dictionary) proposes House Of Depression or Misery.

Centrality of 'Bethany' in John:  raising of Lazarus:  hand, feet and face, 'remove the stone',  Mary's annointing Jesus/Lord's feet with her hair, Jesus' laying aside garments, Mary, Martha and Jews from Jerusalem J 11-12

the titles of Jesus involve the use of 2: ie. 'believed in his name' v 12, 'the only Son ' v 14, 'the only Son' v 18, 'Lamb of God' v 29, 'the Lamb of God!' v 36, 'Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph' v 45, 'the Son of man' v 51...

[44] Now Philip was from Beth-sa'ida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

[45] Philip found Nathan'a-el, and (      ) said to him2, "We have found him3 of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 
Philip's use of ‘we’:  therefore he heard from Andrew, Peter (and the unnamed disciple and/or J Bp regarding their experience of (Jesus))?  Are they with Philip or is this a separate mission?  In the first we have the double usage of ‘Lamb of God’ whereas in this event \/ there is the 2nd use of ‘Son of God’ and the 1st ‘the King of Israel’ v 48.  In the narrative we already had ‘the only Son’. 2x v 14, 18 ('the only Son' and 'the King of Israel' not present in the synoptic gospels)

This verse is critically important if it is true that the gospel author John was linking his gospel with the book of Genesis using Isaiah.  From the first direct reference to Isaiah 40 (reading the whole chapter) one finds the use of ‘lift up of eyes’ which is common to the two books (as ‘lifting up of voice’) along with the use of ‘white’ and ‘field’ here.  
In the gospel of John, the two uses of ‘white’ are found as in this verse and in chapter 20 with Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb when she discovers the ‘two angels’ in ‘white’ with Jesus behind her whom she first sees as a gardener, and once her name is called, she turns and she calls him ‘Rabon'ni’ and ‘Teacher’.  
The use of  ‘white’ in this verse attached to ‘field’, combined with the theme of ‘before Abraham was, I am’ points to the importance of the term ‘field’  in the book of Genesis.  Two angels in white where body of Jesus laid, Mary Magdalene meditating on these two angels, turning around and seeing Jesus as gardener in terms of second Adam, (considering ‘gardener’, ‘before Abraham was, I am’) and general ‘I am’ statements, one might ask if ‘He in the beginning’ (which contains 2 'him', J 1.2-3)  takes one back to the garden and through in a reconciliatory sense--and the significance of 'field' in that reconciliation.
